MONK / NUN SPONSORSHIP

For nearly fifty years now, since the Communist Chinese occupation of Tibet, monks, nuns and lay people have been trekking across the Himalayas to Nepal and India.  Undergoing extreme hardship to escape Chinese persecution, they face being shot at, imprisoned and tortured. They also face such hardships as hunger and frost bite from the freezing conditions of the Himalayan winter, which is when they often make their escape to reduce the chance of capture by military personnel. Many of them also face death during their escape.
At the great monasteries of Sera, Drepung and Ganden, now rebuilt in South India, they arrive with nothing, homesick and anxious for those left behind, but determined to be free to continue their studies. They often get sick as a result of the drastic change in climate and diet.  As the exodus of people from Tibet increases, there is increasing pressure on the limited infrastructure and resources available to them.  Monks, Nuns and lay people are being accommodated in facilities intended for fewer numbers.  Food is being stretched further, and the battle against illness and disease is constant.

You can help

It is easy to make a huge difference in the life of a monk or nun.  You may support him or her to engage in a rigorous religious life of meditation, prayer, study, debate and mindfulness.  You may alternately support a lay person, who is sometimes a young child sent to India without parental guidance, with hopes for gaining an education, freedom of practice, and cultural respect for Tibetan tradition.

By sponsoring someone, you will ultimately be supporting the spread of Dharma and peace.  You will be alleviating suffering.  Offering this generosity not only creates great merit for you, but it also helps to preserve the tradition and culture of Tibet, without which we would not be benefiting from the spread of Dharma in the West.  It will enable the Monks and Nuns to continue their studies, be properly clothed and fed, and receive medical treatment as needed - all the things we tend to take for granted in our relatively comfortable existence.

You may become a sponsor by choosing one of the following: Sponsorship of $200 NZD per year,  of $100 NZD per six months or of $17 NZD per month

You may also provide a one-time financial donation of your choice.
